Next week, three unsigned bands will visit a Converse Rubber Tracks recording studio in Boston, MA, where they’ll lay down some jams at one of Converse’s completely free, state-of-the-art facilities. And as if that wasn’t cool enough, all three bands will work with producer Kurt Ballou (Converge, High on Fire, Torche)!

MetalSucks held an open application process in July for bands to apply, then Axl and Vince worked with Kurt to choose their three favorites. (Three more bands will have a similar opportunity next month with producer Will Putney at Converse Rubber Tracks Brooklyn.) We’ll be previewing each of the selected bands in the days leading up to these recording sessions, so you can get a taste of what’s in store for ya! Today, we feature WVRM from Greenville, SC.

As both spelling and the content of WVRM’s name suggest, this is band that makes deeply, unsettlingly ugly music. Specifically: they make deeply, unsettlingly ugly grindcore. And like all the best grindcore, WVRM’s music sounds like it’s coming from someplace deep down dark, someplace most people will never acknowledge or confront; it’s antisocial, it’s pestilential, it’s reprobate.

It’s also really well-written, further proof that song structure and making a glorious racket don’t have to be mutually exclusive goals. Their 2014 release, Swarm Sound, does, indeed, feel like the aural equivalent of tossing a cherry bomb into a hornet’s nest… but it’s also got memorable riffs and, dare I say, hooks. It’s incredibly addictive; don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Check Swarm Sound and hear the insanity for youself below! There are three other killer release on WVRM’s Bandcamp page, too!
