High On Fire to Release Epic Animated Video for “The Black Plot”

0

In addition to being the torch-carriers of true heaviness in modern metal, High On Fire have also always managed to capture the visual aesthetic of the genre in a way that no one else does. Whether it’s the brilliant imaginings of their long-time cover illustrator Arik Roper or the THC-soaked motorcycle trip of the Christ-twin Balteazeen in the “Fertile Green” video, there’s always a beautiful bridge between the world of low-brow art and aural brutality.

The band’s newest collaboration, an animated video for “The Black Plot,” will make its world debut via Adult Swim on September 10th. Directed by renowned artist Skinner, the project was executed by the visual arts team Hey Beautiful Jerk who has also worked with acts such as Mastodon and Run the Jewels. The video plays out like a psychedelic fever dream reminiscent of the 1981 cult classic Heavy Metal, when the genre was still at the forefront of its creation.

So many elements of a sci-fi fantasy classic are involved here: an ancient witch-priestess with powerful healing psychotropics, the warrior protagonist slaughtering masses of talon-bearing deadeye demons, even the crowning of a new ruler of this underworld. It’s a great fucking time set to one of the best tracks from last year’s Luminiferous, and you definitely shouldn’t miss it when it premieres on Adult Swim on September 10th. For now, check out the teaser:

In conjunction with this release, eOne is also putting out a limited edition bundle of cassettes of Luminiferous with the band’s other most recent albums, Snakes for the Divine and De Vermis Mysteriis, available for preorder here.
