Don’t be a “Fruitcake;” Listen to the New Brain Tentacles Track!

0

For such bizarre music — it barely qualifies as metal — Brain Tentacles sure seem to be getting a lot of attention lately. MS scribe Chain Wallace wrote up their track “The Sadist” a few weeks back, after which WSOU DJ Mike C. picked it as his “Pick of the Week” for August 12th.

“OK, whatever, you guys like weird music outside of metal sometimes,” I hear you saying. That may be the case, but Brain Tentacles are gonna head out on tour with Gorguts and Intronaut next month, and that’s most certainly metal.

The band has a metal pedigree, sure — featuring saxophonist Bruce Lamont (Yakuza), drummer Dave Witte (Municipal Waste, every band ever) and bassist Aaron Dallison’s (Keelhaul) — but there’s no masking the fact that this is some challenging, outside-the-box heavy jazz fusion type-stuff. That said, their new single “Fruitcake,” premiered on CLRVYNT with a trippy, surreal music video, is surprisingly accessible; despite the lack of words (not exactly rare in today’s heavy music landscape) there’s that hooky sax/bass riff to latch onto, and a heavy, thunderous chorus. And at less than 3 minutes long, this thing may as well be a pop smash.

Watch and listen below. Brain Tentacles’ self-titled debut album comes out September 30th on Relapse; pre-order here.
