Meshuggah’s Mårten Hagström Says New Tool Demos Represent the Band’s “Best” Work to Date

The members of Meshuggah are cooler than you are. You probably already know this because they’re in Meshuggah and you’re not*, but just to emphasize this, guitarist Mårten Hagström recently revealed that he and drummer Tomas Haake have heard demos for the new Tool album.

From a Google translation of a new interview with Rocksverige.se (by way of The PRP):

“Yes, and we have contact with [Tool] quite often. I do not know what’s up with their record, but we say this … this is the typical tool and they’re the best band and they are the only band that is slower than we are. I know that Tomas was talking to Danny Carey just preform weekend when he was over in the States and then it was apparently like ‘Well, it will probably take a while.’ Last year I was, and Tomas and visited Danny in his house, when he was not too long ago had become a father, and when he played the demo material from the upcoming album.

It was the demos, but it’s the best I’ve heard of Tool can I say. Then we of course like ‘Shit, then it will probably safe next year!’ And it was a little hopeful, but now it does not seem so long. We will talk to them in a few weeks when we play with them and Slayer in Sacramento, so then I can pump them a little. (laughs)”

So, there you have it: the new Tool demos exist, and Mårten Hagström thinks they sound splendid. Maybe someday Tool will deign to release them and the rest of us can judge, too.

In the meantime, Meshuggah’s new album, The Violent Sleep of Reason, ain’t no slouch itself, and comes out this Friday, October 7.

*Unless you are, in which case: Hi! Big fan.
