Loudwire has premiered an upcoming EP, creatively titled Kevät / Värimyrsky, from experimental black metal band Oranssi Pazuzu. Refusing to be pigeonholed, the group has focused on blending elements of doom and noise into its usual fare, resulting in two somber new tracks that offer up melancholy atmosphere and trance-ridden riffs in equal measure.

The first tune, “Kevät” is probably the biggest departure from Oranssi Pazuzu’s usual mood, featuring a plodding intro that paves the way for the track’s heavy body to continue forward in a mesmeric state as its trudges the depths of whatever darkness in which it chooses to linger. It’s definitely not for everyone — and if you’ve never heard the band before it may not be the greatest introduction you’ll come across — but it’s a tune that pays off for patient listeners, especially if you’re a fan of the band’s past material.

The second track, “Värimyrsky,” is where they really find their form, once again leading the charge with a disarming introduction before giving way to what feels like an explosion of dissonant sound. They’ve described the track as follows:

“‘Värimyrsky,’” which translates to “Color Storm,” is about “the feeling of disappointment that launches a desire to dissolve back into natures circulation. Letting wolves rip your mind and letting your liquids spill to the ground, birthing new life that has more meaning.”

Wolves ripping your mind is an apt description of the entire EP. So, if that sounds like it might be up your alley, head on over to Loudwire and give it a listen. If you dig it you can pre-order the EP here. Oranssi Pazuzu also have three other albums coming out in May, one of which contains remastered tracks from two previous split releases, another of which is a re-release of their debut full-length Muukalainen Puhuu (2009), and the final piece of which is a reissue of Kosmonument (2012), getting the domestic vinyl treatment for the first time ever. You can pre-order vinyl for all of those over on at 20 Buck Spin.
