Unsigned and Unholy: Fvneral Fvkk, Nihilosaur, Uhtcearu

There is a band called Fvneral Fvkk. You will begin listening to them because their name is Fvneral Fvkk, but you will continue listening to them because they’re really fucking good. Firmly in the Pallbearer/Khemmis camp with perhaps a dash of Type O.

Unsigned and Unholy alumni Nihilosaur return with their third full-length album, Hymn & Ruin, out now. Vaguely proggy metal with ’90s art rock influences and an occasional skronky tilt. A strange combo, yes, on paper, but it works in practice.

It’s become really, really tough to find new black metal that impresses me, but Uhtcearu have something going that caught my ear. I think it’s the raw but clear production — you just don’t hear black metal that sounds like this very often — more suited to a prog metal band, which Uhtcearu also are.
