I assume you’re all familiar with Daler Mehndi’s Punjabi classic “Tunak Tunak Tun,” since it was on TRL so often back in the day. But in the event that you’ve somehow never heard it before, it sounds like this:

Which brings us to New Delhi’s Bollywood, a two-person project dedicated to doing metal covers of pop songs. The latest of which, you’ve probably guessed, is “Tunak Tunak Tun.” What you end up with is sort of like an Indian, metalcore Roots: couched in the mostly familiar metal tropes (chugga-chug riffs, good cop/bad cop vocals, breakdowns, pig squeals, etc.) are several instruments (and a singing style!) from Bollywood’s native country (which I, unfortunately, am not educated enough to be able to readily identify), resulting in music which is both an adoption and an homage.

Is the Bollywood cover any good? It’s not my cup of tea, but you have to admit, it’s different. It’s also apparent that people largely dig it: as of this writing, the video has over 10,000 views and 1,000 likes. And I admit, despite not being that into it, after listening a few times for the purpose of writing this post, it got stuck my head. That’s never nuthin’.

Check out “Tunak Tunak Tun” below. In addition to Bollywood’s regular members, Karan Katiyar (music) and Jayant Bhadula (vocals), the track also features Brazil’s Bonde do Metaleiro. If you dig the track, Bollywood have a whole lot more to offer on their Bandcamp page.
