Track/Video Premiere: Wolf King, “Greater Power”

Track/Video Premiere: Wolf King, “Greater Power”People often ask us, “What do you look for in new bands you write about on MetalSucks?” The lazy answer is “Whatever Axl and Vince personally like,” which is how it’s always been since we started this rinky-dink operation back in late 2006. But what do we personally like? This far into the game — eleven-plus years of this nonsense! — we’re incredibly jaded, and something’s got to be fresh and original for us to really take notice and get behind it.

Enter Wolf King, a Bay Area four-piece who describe themselves as blackened hardcore. Following an EP in 2016, the band will release their debut full-length, Loyal to the Soil, via Prosthetic Records this spring. The band shares certain sonic similarities with fellow hardcore-inspired metal upstarts Gatecreeper, Code Orange and to a slightly lesser extent Power Trip, but there’s something truly unique about the band’s sound that drew us to their new track “Greater Power” after just one listen. It’s angrier, grimmer, grimier, fuzzier, heavier… in a word, it’s just way more nasty than anything any of those other bands are doing right now. Put it on the album sticker (do they even still make those?): “MetalSucks calls it ‘Nasty’!”

Check out “Greater Power” below in the Nikko Deluna-produced video clip and you’ll hear what we’re talking about. Loyal to the Soil comes out on April 27th; pre-order here, and catch the band at New England Metal and Hardcore Fest is you’re heading to WOOSTAH in April, along with some tour dates across the U.S. (listed underneath the embed) to get them there.
