TesseracT’s New Video for “King” is Confusing But I Think I Like It

I’m not entirely sure I understand the plot in TesseracT’s video for their new song “King.” There’s a family of three that’s fallen upon rough times: the father loses his job, the mother is terminally ill and the boy is regularly bullied and beat up. We then see Death Himself literally digging a grave — are we to infer that these people will soon die? There is another couple seen kissing and canoodling in bed — who are they? A younger version of the parents perhaps? Then we see a reversal, literally: the blood that was pouring down Death’s body changes directions and starts retreating upward, suggesting things might be turning around for this unlucky trio. But then the family ventures out into the woods together to meet Death, and Death is holding a seedling plant. Is the message one of those “death is a new birth” things? I’m not following. Anyhoo, the video certainly is visually striking, I’ll give it that.

Musically, I’m really enjoying the direction TesseracT have taken things on “King” — this is as slow and groovy as I’ve ever heard the band get, and I tend to like them most when they go that direction.

Check out TesseracT’s previous single “Luminary” as well; both come from their forthcoming album Sonder which comes out April 20th via Kscope and can be pre-ordered here. TesseracT go on tour with Plini and Astronoid in April and May; dates here.
