Stay Asleep Come For All Your Dissonances on Mourner

Chicago has pumped out some of the best underground bands of the last ten years — from Immortal Bird to Diamond Plate  to Weekend Nachos — and next up to the plate is Stay Asleep, who are set to drop one of 2018’s debuts-to-beat, Mourner.

I can’t imagine a new band more suited to MetalSucks readers, given Stay Asleep’s bastardized amalgamation of overweight amplifier cabs, mathy open string lines, thick Ballou-through-an-Emperor chords, and Space Jam-level slams. And since they’re a trio — drummer Dave Collis, bassist-vocalist Nick Wakim, and guitarist Kiel Arneson — no amount of sonic space is wasted. After shedding for four years — and sharing the stage with bands like Bongripper, Trap Them, Cult Leader, and Magrudergrind — Stay Asleep have honed their craft. Mourner is tight.

(As an added bonus for those still mourning the loss of Weekend Nachos, former Nacho guitarist Andy Nelson laid this thing to tape at his Bricktop Recording studio and provided the mix.)

So you should know what you’re in for. Stream Mourner now, and check Stay Alseep on a tour of venues built around gross bathrooms around the US (dates below). The album drops April 13th via the band’s own Spirit & Discipline Recordings.
