Yuimetal May No Longer Be in Babymetal

Babymetal fans currently have one pressing question on their minds: “Where is Yuimetal?”

In December, the group performed in Hiroshima without the singer/dancer — whose birth name is Yui Mizuno — claiming that she was ill but wanted the show to go on even without her. Now Metal Injection reports that she also missed the launch of last night’s tour in Kansas City, Missouri:

“Instead, Su-metal and Moametal performed with two unnamed backup dancers who were not introduced to the crowd. There has yet to be any official announcement on the matter. But fans are starting to take notice and a #WheresYuimetal hashtag campaign has sprung up with some interesting tweets, to the point that Nikkan Sports reported that the hashtags trended in Japan on Twitter.”

It’s tempting to guess that Yuimetal’s absence marks the beginning of the Menudo-ization of the Babymetal — meaning she’s gotten too old for the gig — except at age 18, she’s not even the trio’s oldest member (that honor belongs to 20-year-old Sumetal, né Suzuka Nakamoto).

While we try to get to the bottom of this, you can check out some footage of Babymetal performing two new songsthe names of which are not presently known, below, courtesy of Loudwire (they debuted a new single, “Distortion,” earlier this week). You can also check out some of the more entertaining #WheresYuimetal tweets which have been making the rounds. Get all of their upcoming tour dates here.
