Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018

Boy oh boy. As all of you are reading this, I’m on a plane heading to Los Angeles for Decibel Magazine’s Metal & Beer Fest. I could not be more excited. The lineup itself is killer, but that fact that they’re throwing in craft beer as wel is just too much. I’ll also be shitposting on the MetalSucks Instagram, so be sure to follow @metalsucks and  @philboozeman for all the shenanigans. If any of you will be there, be sure to say hi. And if you have suggestions for shit to do in LA during my downtime other than being hungover, then I’m all ears.

Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018Thy Art Is Murder
“Death Perception” (Single) (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with Carnifex, Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin
Listen: “Death Perception”

I never got around to covering this single last week because TAIM didn’t release it until after last weeks STCOT ran. I’d imagine that most of you are aware of what TAIM bring to the table for deathcore so I won’t get into that. But what I will get into is that no matter how awesome of a fucking riff they write in the beginning of the song, like this one, they always seem to fuck things up with unnecessarily harsh time signature changes and generic breakdowns. So I don’t know. I used to love this band and now I have a hard time listening to anything other than Hate. Maybe I’ve been hanging out with Axl too much, maybe my tastes are just changing. The world may never know.

Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018Rotting Christ
“Fire, God and Fear” (single)
On a playlist with Septicflesh, Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir
Listen: “Fire, God and Fear”

Should you be excited that Rotting Christ are releasing  new album called The Heretics, on February 15? You should be. Are you excited that you don’t have to wait until then to listen to a track from it? You’d better be. “Fire, God and Fear” has every staple element of Rotting Christ in regards to epic melody and aggression so this is obviously worth a listen to get you hyped up for the album and my new column, Shit That Comes Out Next Year! Don’t worry, that’s not actually happening.

Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018Nachtmystium
Resilient (EP) (Lupus Lounge)
On a playlist with Leviathan, Krieg and Deathspell Omega
Listen: “Silver Lanterns”

Are you amazed that Nachtmystium still exist? If so, then fear not because you’re not the only one. After all the shady shit that went down with Blake Judd, the make up, and then all the new shit that might be going with him, it seems like the project is destined to be as stable as The Faceless are at any given moment. However, off-stage fuckery aside, the music is actually pretty good! I do like Nachtmystium but again, it seems destined for heartbreak knowing Judd’s history. But whatever, time will tell for that. In the mean time, justt enjoy the music.

Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018Kenosis
Consecrationem (Prosthetic Records)
On a playlist with Rotting Christ, Deathspell Omega and Bkut aus Nord
Listen: “Abraham’s Dagger”

According to a press release — and probably the dictionary — kenosis is a theological term of Greek origin for the “self emptying (of one’s own will) in order to receive God and the Divine Will”, or a divinity becoming human, by casting aside all divine attributes. Said press releases goes on to delve into the lyrical/spiritual themes of the music, and you can read that in the YouTube description of the song linked, but should you give it your time? Absolutely. “Abraham’s Dagger” sounds evil as hell, just like black metal should. Here’s to hoping Kenosis are around for a while because Consecrationem is their debut EP and it’s killer.

Shit That Comes Out Today: November 30, 2018Sarah Longfield
Disparity
On a playlist with  The Fine Constant, Animals As Leaders and S
Listen: “Citrine”

Honestly, I would love to sit here and poke fun at the music video for being low-effort, but the video didn’t really need to be much more than Sarah Longfield playing the guitar because she is fucking incredible at it. For those of you that follow Rob Scallon, and that should be everyone, she has been featured in many of his videos and even played old school Job For A Cowboy on a toilet, which coincidentally is where their earlier stuff belongs. But I digress, the music is dreamy and trance-like all while being technical and smooth. So fire this up and watch this girl shred. She’s more talented than any of us will ever be.
