Video Premiere: Pound Get Skronky and Groovy in Double-Feature Premiere

0

Seattle duo Pound take a completely different approach to instrumentation than you’ve ever seen before: guitarist Ryan Schutte plays a baritone nine-string guitar and drummer David Stickney plays two side-by-side drumkits that are tuned differently, positioned at a 90° angle. Based on that setup alone one might assume the outfit has a decidedly fresh take on composition.

One might assume correctly: the instrumental wrecking crew is cranking out some absolutely gnarly material, as you’ll quickly learn from the combo music video of two tracks from their upcoming album, “xx_.+-x_ _” and “x..^..x-x..^..x-x..^..x-x..^..x-” (rhythmic notations of the songs’ riffs/patterns). Off-kilter time signatures collide with unshakeable grooves while skronky, dissonant chords match up with an almost post-hardcore melodic sensibility. It’s as if Meshuggah, Botch and Coalesce teamed up to form a new band that pushed the boundaries of each far beyond anything they’ve ever attempted before.

Watch the music video below, directed by Michael Kane and Ryan Abrahamson at Counting Coup Media. Pound’s new album •• comes out May 31st via Silent Pendulum; pre-order via either the label or band, with different bundles available at each.
