Wax Trax! Will Celebrate Record Store Day with Documentary and Soundtrack Release

0

Record stores are a dying breed, and it’s even rarer to find one that still sells underground material. In the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s (a time I wish I could’ve experienced as more than a pants-shitting baby) one could walk into a store and find themselves amongst like-minded individuals whose only mission was to find their latest fix, an enthusiasm that fostered a creative and free-flowing space for bands to present their experimental music to willing ears. This is how the legendary Chicago based Wax Trax! record store helped give birth to the industrial genre and bands such as Ministry, Front 242, KMFDM and more.

Every good story needs to be told, so it’s only fitting that Record Store Day partnered with Vans to bring us a documentary revealing the story behind the dawn of a new genre. The film Industrial Accident, set for release on April 16, tells the story of Wax Trax! Records founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher and their chaos-fueled adventure that pushed the boundaries of music, art and counterculture, breeding a devout fanbase of nonconformists.

In honor of the upcoming film, Wax Trax! has compiled an accompanying soundtrack dubbed Industrial Accident that also features previously unreleased material by some of the label’s bands. Naturally, it will be available on Record Store Day (April 13), three days before the release of the movie, and can be pre-ordered here.

Check out the trailer for the film below and the soundtrack’s tracklist underneath. If you live in one of six major North American cities, Vans will be kicking off the album launch with a Wax Trax! Experience featuring screenings of the film, a live Q&A and a Ministry performance of Wax Trax!-era material. According to the Wax Trax! blog, a purchase of the limited edition blue-vinyl pressing will guarantee you two VIP tickets into any of the dates (also below), and while a GA ticket is free, those are first-come, first-serve and do not guarantee entry. Although venues are still to be determined, an RSVP link for general admission access will be announced via Wax Trax! news blast, as well as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, so stay tuned!
