Video: Heavy Metal Knitting Competitions Are Now a Thing

In the everything-all-the-time mashup culture of 2019, nothing is off limits, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that there’s now a heavy metal knitting competition. No longer is knitting the sole domain of rocking chair grand-marms or does metal belong only to young men — everyone can be a part of everything! It’s quite beautiful frankly.

The event, hosted in Joensuu, Finland, featured twelve contestants knitting on stage while the band Maniac Abductor played behind them. If that sounds weird, yeah, it’s definitely weird, but all the contestants — who were chosen from a larger international pool — seem to be having the time of their lives. The rules of the competition remain a mystery — are contestants judged on their knitted results? or their performance, ala an air guitar championship? who won?  — but the highlight video below paints a picture of quite a raucous good time, and that is something we can all get behind.
