Grade School Student Permitted to Miss Music Class So He Can See Tool

Depending on how you see this story, it either illustrates why the American education system is failing, or calls attention to a great teacher who should be a shining example for all educators across the globe.

What happened is this: a proud papa wanted to take his 12-year-old son to see a Tool show in Houston, Texas. So “My wife emailed his band director to make sure he wouldn’t miss any practice or rehearsal the next day.”

And how did the band director respond?

“If there is [practice that day], TOOL is a GOOD reason to miss it. My only response, take me with you guys!

“I am super jealous that he will have that opportunity and I will not punish him for missing for TOOL. How is he doing? Do you like their new album.”

Wow. The woman who taught music when Vince and I were twelve would not have been down with Tool. I doubt she would have known who Tool were. She was a white lady with a huge ‘fro who made us songs about singing animals and holding hands and feelings and all that shit. Not nearly so metal-friendly as this teacher.
