Judas Priest Will Begin Writing a New Album in Early 2020

Judas Priest’s 2018 album, Firepower, made QUITE an impact, more than I even realized at the time, garnering enough votes from our esteemed panel of nearly 200 industry insiders and musicians to land a #13 ranking on our 25 Best Metal Albums of the 2010s list. We’re assuming that means regular, non-hoity-toity folk dug it a whole lot, too.

So, fear not, Priest fans: the band will be back at it before you know it, hitting the writing room in early 2020 to begin assembling ideas for a new album. Speaking to long-running Boston metal radio station WAAF, Rob Halford, who is currently promoting his solo Christmas album, said this:

“I’ll be heading back to the U.K. for the holidays, see my family and friends. And then we’re gonna start. There are two things happening. We’re gonna go into writing sessions in the early New Year, because we’re still buzzing from the Firepower record and we’re raring to go, to see what else what we can come up with musically, through writing. So we’ve got that in planning. Then we go into the big production for the 50th anniversary, which, I believe, kicks off in Finland in June, I think it is. And then that’s it there. We’re off around the world for the rest of 2020 and some of 2021, celebrating 50 years of Judas Priest.”

While that 50th anniversary tour will undoubtedly be an amazing experience for fans, the bummer is that all that touring surely means it’ll be 2021 at the earliest, probably 2022, before Priest even hit the studio again to record their next album. But, being honest, I care more about seeing a bombastic live show celebrating the band’s incredible 50-year history than I do new music at this point, so I’m totally OK with it.
