Surround Your Ears with Code Orange’s “Sulfur Surrounding”

You probably don’t need to be reminded that Code Orange’s heavily-anticipated new album, Underneath, comes out this Friday, March 13 on Roadrunner (pre-order it here)… but in case you do, the band has premiered another cut off the record, “Sulfur Surrounding.”

And it’s an interesting choice for a new single! It’s the third song the band has unveiled from Underneath: the title track, a catchy, ’90s alt rock-esque industrial tune that rubbed some (close-minded) fans the wrong way… “Swallowing the Rabbit Whole,” a pugilistic, mostly-more-“traditional” Code Orange song that nonetheless maintained some of the electronic elements of “Underneath”… and now “Sulfur Surrounding,” which is kinda-sorta in-between the two (appropriately, it falls smack dab in the middle of Underneath‘s fourteen tracks). On the one hand, the industrial elements are far less prominent here than they are on the other two singles, and the middle section is mos def circle-pit ready. On the other hand, most of the song is relatively melodic, melancholic, and moody. It’s not a ballad, but it’s probably as close to being a ballad as Code Orange have ever created. I quite like it, but I can see it disappointing the same people who were down on “Underneath.” If the goal is to get as many fans into the tent before Underneath‘s release, well, it probably won’t accomplish that. On the other hand, if the goal is to demonstrate that there’s an array of material on Underneath
