Code Orange’s Jami Morgan Describes How He Turns Internet Sh*t-Talkers on Their Heads

0

Bands get a lot of shit, especially on the internet. Pittsburgh metal upstarts Code Orange, as amazing as they are, are no exception. But it’s what you do with that shit-talk that counts, and in that regard the band uses that negative energy as fuel, according to drummer/vocalist Jami Morgan.

On this week’s episode of The MetalSucks Podcast, Morgan joined us ahead of the band’s highly-anticipated upcoming record, Underneath (read our official review). When the topic of internet trolls came up, Jami explained how he flipped the haters on their heads following the release of the album’s singles:

“There’s things you can constructively learn from. Sometimes I go see stuff that I said or even if I know I didn’t really say it like that and people are mad because of that, it helps me learn something. It’s like, ‘Okay, if I read [what I said], what would I think?’ And sometimes I go, ‘Yeah! I get it’” And it helps me learn how to speak and how to present my point of view in a way that is the way I would want to see it. Not in a way that somebody else would want to see it, but in a way where I can look at it and go, ‘Okay, I’m proud of that. Fuck whatever anybody else says.’

“And then on the flip side, when we put the first single up for this record, we were getting a lot of heat. People were saying, “You’re selling out,” and all that stuff. And I knew we had that second one in the chamber, like the video was all done, and it made me so fuckin’ happy. Everything they would write was exactly what the second one was. I was like, ‘You’re fucked! You’re not gonna be able to say shit!’ I was like, ‘Man, we got ’em.’ That was the fun part of internet shit talk.”

Hopefully the release of Underneath, which arrives in March 13, will silence some of those haters… although there’s no way everyone will ever be satisfied.
