Korn’s James “Munky” Shaffer on the Coronavirus: “Mother Nature Comes to Collect on the Karmic Debt”

There’s a poem by the Catholic author Laura Kelly Fanucci that has gone, well, viral. It’s kinda sweet and kinda cheesy and I wish she hadn’t brought religion into it but hey that’s just me.

ANYWAY, one of the latest notable people to share the poem on social media is none other than Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer, who included with it the following likely-to-be-controversial message:

“Mother Nature comes to collect on the karmic debt. Hopefully we all learn something about ourselves, culture, our inter-connections on this planet.”

While I think “karmic debt” is probably too spiritual of a concept for a cynic like me, I actually do agree with Munky (now there’s a phrase I never thought I’d type). The planet is over-populated, resources are dwindling, and COVID-19 does seem like nature’s latest attempt to get us to cut it the hell out. People always talk about the planet dying, but the planet won’t really die — it will figure out a way to survive. We are the ones who are totally screwed if we don’t treat Earth with more respect.

You can check out Munky’s post, along with Fanucci’s poem, at the bottom of this post. Assuming things have gotten back to something resembling normal by then, Korn will launch a co-headline tour with Faith No More in August. Otherwise, may as well spend your time in an online casino.
