“God Above God”: Virgin Steele Finally Getting the Hang of Windows Movie Maker

It’s been eight years since Virgin Steele released their video for “Perfect Mansions,” and I’m pleased to report that it seems like frontman David DeFeis and company are finally starting to master Windows Movie Maker. Given another eight years, I have little doubt that the band will have figured out a way to make something roughly on par with a wedding video produced circa 1992 (only with way worse music, of course).

Highlights include:

  • Voice-over by DeFeis’ mom (00:38)
  • A copyright notice over likely-unlicensed stock footage (00:58)
  • Inexplicable partial framing out one of the band’s guitar players (1:54 – 2:12)
  • Everyone sit down and takes a rest! (2:13)
  • DeFeis’ hand symbol for “trees” (2:28)
  • The superimposition of an image of clouds right as DeFeis sings the word “clouds” (2:47)
  • The superimposition of an image of stars right as DeFeis sings the word “stars” (2:54)
  • Getting to wonder why they didn’t superimpose an image of trees right as DeFeis sang the word “trees” back at 2:28
  • Whoops! Break’s over, everyone back on their feet!! (3:06)
  • Whatever the fuck is happening at 3:37
  • DeFeis making the hand sign for sexual intercourse when he sings the phrase “my violation” (3:46)
  • Shot of DeFeis doing a guitar bend when there is no audible guitar bend (4:40)
  • Shot of DeFeis playing piano when there is no audible piano (4:45)
  • The only real candle in the entire video (8:16)

(Oh, and lest you think this was filmed in DeFeis’ home because of social distancing, the way, for example, the new Cattle Decapitation video was, keep in mind that DeFeis has shot lots of other Virgin Steele videos in his home, too… so, really, the guy is just a trendsetter!)

Watch the video for “God Above God” below. It was on an album, I don’t know what it was called, who cares? But it was released by SPV/Steamhammer, which is a real label. So never give up on your dreams, kids. If these guys can get signed, anyone can get signed.
