Lars Ulrich Surprises Pediatric ICU Nurse, Announces Metallica S&M² Box Set

So Jimmy Kimmel has been doing this segment called “Healthcare Hero” in which he spotlights a healthcare worker who has been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. And the focus of last night’s segment, a pediatric ICU nurse from Long Island named Tracey Bednar, was greeted with a very special surprise: Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich joined the call to thank Bednar for everything she’s done during these unprecedented times.

That’s obviously quite menschy of Lars, and great for Tracey, too. But, somewhat more selfishly, most of will probably find the most exciting aspect of Ulrich’s surprise to be that he announced Metallica’s plans to release a box set of last year’s S&M² performances with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.

After promising to give Bednar the VIP treatment the next time Metallica are able to play in her geographic vicinity, Ulrich held up a copy of the box set and told the nurse:

“This is our next release called ‘S&M2’ [showing the new box set], which is coming up in August. You [Tracey] will have the first signed copy of this special box set from me and the fellas.”

Unfortunately, that’s all we know right now. Will the box set will feature one, both, or some mix/ combination of the S&M² shows? We know the band professionally filmed at least one of the shows, because it played in theaters for one night — is it safe to assume that film will be part of the box set? What other special goodies will be included? Enquiring minds wanna know!

Presumably we’ll get some answers soon — if this thing is coming out in August, the band will have to launch pre-orders, like, yesterday. So stay tuned for more details.

In the meantime, here’s Lars’ guest appearance on Kimmel:
