There is Now a ‘Flying V’ Airplane

0

Praise be Loudwire writer Chad Childers for this gorgeously executed opening line: “‘The Flying V’ certainly helped the guitar industry take off in a new direction, but can the ‘Flying V’ actually fly? Well done, dude! I haven’t had that much pun with a line since the time Vinnie Vincent cut me one on the dashboard of his Camry. Heyo!

Anyhoo: Dutch airline KLM and researchers at Delft University of Technology are working on an airplane with a “Flying V” design — mimicking the iconic Gibson guitar — which experts estimate could cut fuel consumption by up to 20% by integrating the fuselage and wings into one. A ten-foot long model of the plane built to scale is currently in the testing phase and is showing promising results, meaning the team could get the green light soon to begin building and testing this thing at its full, intended commercial airliner size.

Check out a video of the test flight below. We’ll be right over getting… high.
