Watch the Trailer for Sound of Metal Starring Riz Ahmed

Now that Bill & Ted mania is starting to settle down, we can all turn our attention to the next great metal movie of 2020: Sound of Metal. The film stars Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Venom, Nightcrawler, etc.) and Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Thoroughbreds) as a Jucifer-esque couple/metal band, Blackgammon (who are successful enough to grace the cover of Decibel). The duo undergo a crisis when Ahmed’s character, who is the band’s drummer, begins to suffer from hearing loss… so, basically, every metalhead’s worst nightmare.

The movie was originally announced in 2016 with Dakota Johnson (50 Shades of Grey) and Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) playing the leads. It’s not clear why those two fell out, but the filmmakers traded up IMO.

I haven’t seen the flick yet but it got mostly rave reviews following its debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. It also seems safe to assume that writer/director Darius Marder is a dyed-in-the-wool metal fan: he also wrote The Place Beyond the Pines, in which Ryan Gosling infamously played a Metallica fan.

You can check out the trailer for Sound of Metal below (and don’t adjust your settings — the closed captions are intentional). It’s set to open in select theaters on November 20 before it hits Amazon Prime Video on December 4.
