Gatecreeper surprised the metal world yesterday with the announcement that they’d be releasing a new EP, An Unexpected Reality, on what was then tomorrow. Tomorrow is now today — that’s Wednesday, January 13, in the year of our lord 2021 — meaning we’ve got a whole lotta new Gatecreeper on our hands.

Written and recorded while the band was on lockdown, the first seven songs of the eight-song release — what will constitute “Side A” in certain physical formats — are, according to a press release, “Inspired by grind, punk and hardcore,” and total less than seven minutes in length. Meanwhile, the final song — “Side B” — is eleven-minutes-long, representing “Gatecreeper at their slowest and most funereal.”

Frontman Chase Mason offered of how the idea for this conceptually split EP came about:

“I’ve had the idea to do a record like this for a while. In 2020, we were supposed to be touring all year. Once everything got cancelled, we decided it was the perfect time to turn this idea into a reality.”

You can stream An Unexpected Reality in full below or download it digitally via Bandcamp; it’s available for order in physical formats at this link.
