One need but glance at the title of the new Foo Fighters single, “Waiting on a War,” to understand its timeliness. What’s depressing is that the song apparently written in 2019 (for Grohl’s then-10-year-old daughter, Harper), and it’s actually more timely now than it would have been then. A press release notes that today (January 14) is Grohl’s 52nd birthday; when the frontman and his team scheduled the song’s release for this date, there was no way they could have known that a week earlier, there’s be an attempted coup in the U.S., a day earlier, an American president would make history by being impeached for a second time. Happy birthday, Dave.

Here’s the story behind the track’s creation, as told by Grohl himself:

Last fall, as I was driving my daughter to school, she turned to me and asked, ‘Daddy, is there going to be a war?’ My heart sank as I realized that she was now living under the same dark cloud that I had felt 40 years ago.

I wrote ‘Waiting on a War’ that day.

Everyday waiting for the sky to fall. Is there more to this than that? Is there more to this than just waiting on a war? Because I need more. We all do.

This song was written for my daughter, Harper, who deserves a future, just as every child does.

“Waiting on a War” lyrics

I’ve been waiting on a war since I was young
Since I was a little boy with a toy gun
Never really wanted to be number one
Just wanted to love everyone

Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than
Just waiting on a war?

Everyday waiting for the sky to fall
Big crash on a world that’s so small
Just a boy with nowhere left to go
Fell in love with a voice on the radio

Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than that?
Is there more to this than
Just waiting on a war?
Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that
Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that

I’ve been waiting on a war since I was young
Since I was a little boy with a toy gun

Is there more to this than just waiting on a war?

Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that
Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that
Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that
Just waiting on a war for this and that
There’s got to be more to this than that
Because I need more
Yeah, I need more
Than just waiting on a war
