Dave Mustaine is now officially one step closer to being able to murder mean-spirited bloggers with his bare hands: the 59-year-old Megadeth mastermind recently earned his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The belt was awarded by Reggie Almeida at the Gracie Barra gym in Springfield, TN.

The achievement puts Mustaine roughly at the halfway point to becoming a full-on Jiu-Jitsu master — the remaining belts are brown and black. Each belt also has “degrees” signified by stripes — six degrees for black belt, four degrees for all other belts.

According to Rock Feed, Mustaine began to Tae Kwon Do in 1999 before moving on to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

You can check out video of Mustaine being awarded his purple belt below. Almeida ties it around his waist, which I assume is tradition, but it makes Mustaine look like a little boy and gave me flashbacks to taking after school karate classes when I was like 6 or 7 and my sensei having to tie my belt around my gi because I couldn’t do it properly. I’m just saying.

Megadeth’s new album, which is tentatively titled The Sick, the Dying and the Dead,, is due for release later this year. It will be the band’s first album since 2016’s Grammy-winning Dystopia and their first album since Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019 (he is, thankfully, in remission).
