Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Score Two Golden Globe Nominations

Trent Reznor’s former protégé might be in deep shit right now… but things continue to go swimmingly for the Nine Inch Nails mastermind and his biggest collaborator this century, Atticus Ross.

Reznor and Ross were nominated for two separate Golden Globe Awards this morning, both in the category of Best Original Score – Motion Picture. One of those noms if for their work on David Fincher’s Mank; the other, which they share with Jon Batiste, is for their work on Pixar’s Soul.

They’ll compete against Alexandre Desplat (for George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky), Ludwig Göransson (for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet), and James Newton Howard (for Paul Greengrass’ News of the World).

The duo previously won the Golden Globe in 2011 for Fincher’s The Social Network, and were nominated again in 2012 and 2015, for Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, respectively.

A decade ago, no one would have predicted that these two would become such acclaimed film composers. But this most recent pair of nominations is only the latest in a long list of accolades they’ve received for their work in movies, including an Oscar (for Fincher’s The Social Network), , a Grammy (for Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and an Emmy (for HBO’s Damon Lindelof’s Alan Moore’s Watchmen).

That puts them one Tony Award away from being in the rarified strata of EGOT — people who have won all four major awards. As of this writing, only sixteen people have ever accomplished this feat, including Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and John Legend.

Nine Inch Nails, meanwhile, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past November. You can watch Reznor’s induction speech here.
