Track Premiere: Dust Moth, “I’m Not Anyone”

We’ve been big fans of Dust Moth here at the MetalSucks Mansion since, well, as far back as Dust Moth have existed. The band is a supergroup of sorts — its initial incarnation featuring members of These Arms Are Snakes, Minus The Bear, Undertow and Aeges — but approaching seven years, four releases and some lineup changes later, Dust Moth’s identity now stands entirely on its own, not that their sound ever didn’t.

So here we are with Rising//Sailing, the band’s third full-length (set for release later this month), and their latest single, “I’m Not Anyone,” which MetalSucks is pleased to premiere today. The band’s penchant for lush, dynamic soundscapes is as intact as ever with a weightier rhythm element and more full-bodied production (via early Mastodon producer and former Dust Moth band member Matt Bayles) pushing the band further into post-metal territory. As usual, it’s vocalist Irene Barber who commands special attention, her strong but measured voice the confident but controlled conductor steering the song’s journey.

Barber explains of the song’s subject matter: 

“Lyrically, I think the theme of the song takes its cues from the era of the past five years and how the white psyche lives and meets people of color’s reality. The verses are vignettes of advantage and apathy, capped with refrains of inaction and fear. It’s infuriating. It’s in first person. In the end, there is an attempt to drown out the voice, and Huk Dzabga Liimii (Ryan’s Tsimshian name) so graciously lends and sends his voice up above it all.”
