Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Get Two Academy Award Nominations

Mazel tov to Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor and his most important creative collaborator this century, Atticus Ross: this morning, the duo landed two Academy Award nominations, both in the category of Best Original Score: one for David Fincher’s Mank, and one — along with Jon Batiste — for their work on Pixar’s Soul.

They’ll compete against Terence Blanchard, for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods; Emile Mosseri, for Minari; and James Newton Howard, for Paul Greengrass’ News of the World.

The Soul score won the duo (again, with Batiste) the Golden Globe for Best Original Score – Motion Picture earlier this month.

Assuming they win, it will be the second Oscar for Reznor and Ross, who first won in 2011 for Fincher’s The Social Network.

It will tickle me pink if in the near future I have to type the phrase “two time Academy Award winner” in front of Trent Reznor’s name every time we mention him. But he and Ross aren’t by any means a sure thing. Blanchard scored Da 5 Blood‘s only nom, which is considered something of a snub — I think everyone expected that at least Delroy Lindo would also be nominated — so voters who wanna honor Lee’s latest will only have one opportunity to do so. That could be a serious boon for Blanchard.

The Oscars will take place on April 25.

Last year, Reznor and Ross won an Emmy for their work on HBO’s Watchmen, putting them one Tony away from EGOT glory. I desperately await word of The Downward Spiral: The Musical when Broadway finally reopens.
