Metallica Suing Insurance Company Over Losses From South American Tour Cancellation

Metallica are suing their insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, for breach of contract.

CBSLA reports that the suit was filed this past Monday, June 7 in Los Angeles Superior Court. It asserts that Metallica purchased a standard “cancellation, abandonment and non-appearance insurance” policy for a South American tour with Greta Van Fleet, which was scheduled to begin in April of 2020. After they were forced to cancel the trek due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the band “turned to (Lloyd’s) for the promised and reasonably expected coverage for their losses.”

Lloyd’s of London denied Metallica’s claim, however, citing a ‘communicable disease exclusion’ in the policy. The suit calls the clause “an unreasonably restrictive interpretation of the policy.”

Metallica are seeking unspecified compensatory damages, as well as a declaration of the rights and obligations of the parties.

Said Lloyd’s of London in a statement responding to the suit:

“Lloyd’s is not an insurance company, it oversees and regulates a market of independent insurers. For that reason, we have no information on any specific policy or lawsuit and in any event are not authorized to comment on matters in litigation.”

Although Metallica initially rescheduled the South American dates to December of 2020, those shows obviously did not happen. They have yet to be rescheduled.

In the meantime, Metallica have a pair of festival appearances lined up for later this year. Those are as follows:
