Biffy Clyro and OFF! Cover Metallica’s “Holier Than Thou”
Biffy Clyro and OFF! have released covers of Metallica’s “Holier Than Thou.” I suspect that they waited a couple of hours until after Metallica released pre-production rehearsal audio of the same song just to fuck with me.
The Clyro and OFF! covers are part of The Metallica Blacklist, an album that “celebrates the enduring influence of Metallica with an unprecedented 50+ artists spanning an unbelievably vast range of genres, generations, cultures, continents and more, each contributing a unique interpretation of their favorite Black Album cut.” As has been the case with the other singles from The Metallica Blacklist — “Nothing Else Matters” by Miley Cyrus, Elton John , Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith, and Robert Trujillo, “Enter Sandman” by Juanes, and versions of “Sad But True” by St. Vincent, Sam Fender, and Jason Isbell — both Biffy and OFF! strike an excellent balance between being true to the original and forging their own identity. The OFF! version is more overtly heavy, but the Biffy Clyro version almost sounds like Ghost in places. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them both.
