Video Premiere: Somnuri Contemplate Oblivion on “In the Grey”

We’ve been singing the praises of NY-based sludge outfit Somnuri for years here at MetalSucks, and the band’s latest, a video for “In the Grey” — from their latest album, Nefarious Wave, which came out this past June — is as fantastic an excuse as any to do so once again. We’d scream it from the rooftops every damn day if we could, frankly.

For those unfamiliar, Somnuri deliver a vaguely proggy approach to sludge and post-metal, with no shortage of memorable riffs, deft turns of musical phrase, peaks and valleys, and mastery of their instruments. Mastodon and The Ocean are the closest easy-reference touchstones, but how about you listen and decide for yourself, won’t ya?

The band explains of the new video:

“‘In The Grey’ encompasses a lot of the different styles from our new record, ‘Nefarious Wave.’ The song is about the idea of being stuck in limbo or oblivion and confronting that inner turmoil.  The video was produced and directed by Susan Hunt (Five Sigma Films).”

Give the video for “In the Grey” a watch below. Nefarious Wave is out now via Blues Funeral Recordings; grab it here.

Somnuri will kick off a fully-vaxxed and responsibly conducted tour in the Eastern half of the U.S. next week; check out dates underneath the video!
