Listen: Ghost Cover Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”
Ghost’s version of “Enter Sandman” is the latest cover to surface from The Metallica Blacklist, an upcoming album that features 50+ artists spanning a vast range of genres covering songs from Metallica’s Black Album, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
The cover’s intro is led by a quiet piano line and Tobias Forge’s subdued voice, but the full band kicks in after the first chorus with that trademark Hetfield “huh!” (think the truck hitting the bed). The track sounds unmistakably like Ghost; those vocal harmonies, melodic choices, piano and lead guitar lines, and Papa Emeritus (or a Papa Emeritus-like character) reading the spoken word bible verse. Other artists who submitted covers to The Metallica Blacklist include Corey Taylor, Miley Cyrus, Volbeat, Weezer, Biffy Clyro, Chris Stapleton, Royal Blood, Ghost, the Hu, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith, Phoebe Bridgers, and more. That comes out on October 1, while a super-duper-extra-special-deluxe thirtieth anniversary reissue of the Black Album arrives today, September 10.
Metallica have been deep in “some pretty serious writing” for their next album since last November with the most recent update, indicating ten songs were partially written, coming this past May via frontman James Hetfield.
