Video: Here’s Tool’s “Forty Six & 2” Performed By a String Quartet
There are few metal bands whose work is so widely accepted by fans of both high- and lowbrow art as Tool. Something about the Cali quartet’s progressive nu-metal (or whatever the fuck you want to call it) connects with lovers of everything from goregrind to jazz. So it’s awesome, while not exactly surprising, to hear the Vitamin String Quartet perform the band’s track “Forty Six & 2” so well.
As you’ll see in the video below, the VSQ’s cover of “Forty Six & 2” may not bring the band’s grimy hippie vibe, but it certainly works well with Maynard’s vocal melodies. The cover captures the original’s pained melancholy, and maybe even enhances it. The crew, who have recorded several string-versions-of-this-metal-band albums, definitely know what they’re doing with this song. Overall, it’s the kind of song you might find yourself hearing at a fancy dinner and not recognizing until a minute in. Then, of course, you’d have to flip the table and take a hit from your dugout.
