0

If you want a raging metal song written about a specific and awesome piece of military history, you go to Sabaton. The Swedish war buffs and tour-mongers write songs that are equal parts accurate history lesson and gripping cinematic masterpiece. Now, the band have dropped a new single, and lo and behold, it’s got a story behind it that’s gonna have you putting your hand to your forehead in disbelief.

“The Unkillable Soldier,” as the track is titled, tells the story of Lieutenant-General Sir Adrian Carton De Wiart, who, over the course of the Boer War and the First and Second World Wars, sustained the following injuries:

  • was shot in the face, head, stomach, ankle, leg, hip, and ear
  • got blinded in his left eye
  • survived two plane crashes
  • tunneled out of a POW camp
  • tore off his own fucking fingers when a doctor refused to amputate them

When asked aid, when asked about his WWI experience, “Frankly I had enjoyed the war.” Holy SHIT, this guy was MADE for Sabaton!

As you can imagine, the song is a galloping military metal song of the utmost cheese and deliciousness. It’s everything you want to hear at Wacken. Regarding the track, bassist Per Sundström says:

“The story of Sir Adrian Carton De Wiart represents Sabaton in many ways, but especially because he never gave up in spite of what was thrown against him. We were really captured by the life of this interesting character who ‘frankly enjoyed the war…’”
