Sh*t That Comes Out Today – March 25, 2022
So many problems, so few new releases to listen to while I cry about them.
Death Reaver (Season of Mist)
Dread Reaver delivers the abrasive black metal Abbath fans have grown to adore, with its rapid tempos, grossly distorted guitars, crude mix, and incinerating dark atmosphere. On this new album, the vocals and riffs are set to demolish in every sense of the word. Dream Reaver stomps its listeners with thematic resonance entrenched in a wild, gritty, brain-shattering energy. Drawing on over a decade’s worth of inspirations ranging from Bathory to Motörhead to KISS, this one is worth a listen if you are in need of something stout and slamming.
Lord of Chaos (Spinefarm)
Lord of Chaos is the first new work from London post-punk legends, Killing Joke, in seven years. With haunting vocals and pounding rhythms, the album has a more dark, and industrial feel compared to the band’s prior releases. Conceptually, this is a sophisticated and intriguing record with the lyrical depth to match. Who knew the turmoil of today needed the resurgence of so many retro bands and their aesthetics? I guess Killing Joke did.
Consummatum Est (Messor Grandis Productions)
It’s incredibly invigorating when a new band enters the fray and adds something versatile and adroit to the mix. And by ethereally combining elements of black metal, doom metal, and death metal, that’s exactly what Swedish band Grand Harvest aim to do with their debut album Consummatum Est. Employing menacing and bold vocals shifting over concentrated and robust death metal riffs, they produce a controlled anarchy amongst the noise. It’s a shitload of fun.
