New releases this week were as plentiful as the spring flowers. That didn’t stop me from only having time to review three of them. Is that pollen in your eye or are you crying about it?

Destruction

Diabolical (Napalm)

Diabolical is the fifteenth studio album from German thrash metal band Destruction, and it is jam-packed with the band’s vintage appeal. Rather than attempting to reinvent thrash, the Teutonic force expertly navigates its well-worn territory while still providing outstanding speed and memorable choruses. Diabolical is a massively heavy and musically modern record that mimics the composition and ambiance of Destruction’s earlier pre 2019 efforts. This band’s love of heavy metal is unabashed every time, and this album is no exception.

Hällas

Isle of Wisdom (Napalm)

Wow, this one immediately conjures images of psychedelics and lava lamps — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing! Isle of Wisdom is a trippy musical micro-dose from melodic progressive rockers Hällas. In the midst of recent releases from bands such as Ghost and Twin Temple, this album is a curious blend of 70’s hard rock, proto-metal, folk, and heavy psych elements, that feel oddly nostalgic and yet fits right in with the Class of 2022. Continue on their in-world namesake’s rock adventure and take you a dose of a little something before giving it a listen.

HEALTH

DISCO4 :: PART II (Loma Vista)

Industrial synthwave band Health are the black dog when it comes to conjuring up a dark and dismal atmosphere. More than simply a collection of songs, DISCO4:: PART II is a sensory journey through a world of discord and dysfunction. By refusing to belong to any one genre, HEALTH have developed a highly harrowing soundtrack by utilizing equal parts noise, industrial metal, and deathcore, as well as melodic vocal discord and an overwhelming ethereal reverence for dark vibes. From inception to end, the allure of this record, even if you’re not a fan of its many collaborators, is hard to resist.
