Horror Legend Tom Savini Reveals His Creepy Version of Ash for Evil Dead: The Game

0

The average MetalSucks reader needs no introduction to Tom Savini. The legendary make-up artist created the foam-rubber nightmares for such films as Creepshow, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Friday the 13th, Maniac, The Burning, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. He also played gun-crotched biker Sex Machine in From Dusk Til Dawn and designed Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor‘s most despised mask, so he’s definitely got a weird, storied career under him. Now, Savini has revealed his own take on Ash, the hero of Sami Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise, for the upcoming Evil Dead video game, and man, it’s not what we expected.

As you’ll see in the image below via Bloody Disgusting, Savini’s Ash, which is the first time the artist has ever worked with the Evil Dead franchise, is a bit sexier than one might have predicted. There’s a bit of a Clive Barker kind of vibe here, with the facial scars and the barbed-wire hand replacing Ash’s usual chainsaw arm. That said, there’s also something really cool and creepy to it, similar to Savini’s redesign of Friday the 13th antagonist Jason Voorhess for that franchise’s video game. Tom took us out of our comfort zone here, and made us wonder what an eternal Deadite slayer might actually look like.

Says Savini of the game skin art process:

“Well, with practical you have to physically make the damn thing. Like all the kills in Friday the 13th: the Game — I think I created 144 kills. That’s me sitting here with a pencil and paper, writing it down, and then sending it in. That was the easiest thing. On paper, to me it was just creating magic tricks and grand allusions, but when I see it…Oh my God, it’s horrifying. So, same thing here — with practical I have to physically create the damn thing. I have to sculpt it and mold it and cast it and paint it. With this, it [started as] just a sketch.”

Check out Tom Savini’s Ash below. The variant character will be available via the Collector’s Edition of Evil Dead: The Game.
