Ozzy Osbourne

Patient Number 9 (Sony)

The most important British person of all time besides Tony Iommi releases his latest album, Patient Number 9, with a slew of guest appearances. It’s his best record since 2007’s No More Tears, thanks in part to the strong choices in guest features.

Survival of the Sickest (Napalm)

All hail the HM2 pedal. Whereas Swedish death metal supergroup Bloodbath focused more on blackened death metal for last album The Arrow of Satan is Drawn, Survival of the Sickest is all about the old-school style. Paradise Lost vocalist Nick Holmes is in top form, spitting vicious poetry over songs like “Malignant Maggot Therapy” and “To Die.” Swedish death metal gorehounds would be remise to skip this one.

Empyrean (Nuclear Blast)

Tech death heavyweights Fallujah return with Empyrean, their latest riff-laden banger. Recruiting a new lineup for Empyrean, Fallujah clearly made an effort to pack the album with only their best material. It works surprisingly well—the album’s highs are really high and the ideas that work are well executed. The album meanders at times, but always returns to riffs.

Netherheaven (Metal Blade)

You already know this album fucking rules. If you don’t know, Netherheaven, an album by the American death-thrash metal band Revocation, fucking rules. How these Massholes consistently one-up their last work is beyond the comprehension of the MetalSucks staff, but album number eight will definitely make plenty of year-end lists.

Holy Fawn

Dimensional Bleed (Wax Bodega)

If a slew of death metal releases and a new album from the Prince of Darkness himself aren’t your speed, check out Holy Fawn’s Dimensional Bleed. Falling somewhere in the middle of post-metal, shoegaze and indie/alternative rock, Dimensional Bleed is a moody, brooding record that is comfortable in softness but explodes into heavy post-something metal at just the right times. Dimensional Bleed is dynamic and unique.
