Ghost’s Version of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom Of The Opera” is Unreasonably Good
When Ghost announced their upcoming covers EP Phantomime, the only track that really caught my attention — and likely caught yours, too — was their supposed version of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom Of The Opera.” Originally listed on the iconic British heavy metal band’s debut self-titled album from 1980, the track is a nearly seven and a half minute epic stuffed full of harmonizing guitar solos, galloping rhythms, and Paul D’Anno’s vocals.
Well, it turns out that just a few days before the EP comes out this Friday, Tobias Forge deigned it necessary to drop this Eddie-sized bomb on us. This track doesn’t deserve to be this good. Rather than Ghost-ify the song by maybe slowing it down and making it sound a little spookier like they did to The Beatles classic “Here Comes The Sun,” they kept things on the straight and narrow with this version. And boy, does it slap as a result.
If this and their previous single “Jesus He Knows Me” are any indication, this new EP is on track to be a hell of a release. And it will come out just in time for Ghost to have new music before they head out on tour later this month, which is something Forge said he wanted to happen if possible.
