King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s New Single “Gila Monster” is a Fuzzy Stoner Metal Banger

0

When we reported on it last week, all we knew was the title of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s next album. Well today, we not only know more, but we’ve gotten a thrash-fueled, THC-infused track to let us know that PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation is going to kick all kinds of ass when it releases on June 16.

Earlier today, the band released the single and accompanying video for “Gila Monster,” the first single off of PetroDragonic Apocalypse. As you’ll hear in the clip below, it’s fast, it grooves, and it’s got just enough fuzz in the mix to really set it over the edge.

Speaking on the track’s sound, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist Stu Mackenzie said “Gila Monster” and the new album as a whole was a direct follow up to their 2019 album Infest The Rat’s Nest, which you may or may not remember was very thrash-influenced.

“When we made Rats’ Nest, it felt experimental. It’s just so much fun to play that music, and those songs work so well when we play them live. So we always had it in our minds to make another metal record.”

So there you have it. The band known for changing genres as often as you or I change underwear is returning to the world of metal. Mackenzie said this time around, the album’s got some lore baked into it as a concept album.

“We wanted to start the story in the real world, and then send it to hell. It’s about humankind and planet Earth, but it’s also about witches and dragons and shit.”

That sounds pretty fucking metal. You can check out the full track list for PetroDragonic Apocalypse below, as well as get dates information for their upcoming tour.
