Corey Taylor Refuses to Use Backing Tracks at Upcoming Solo Shows: “If You Hear Me Mess the Words Up, That is Live”
With the recent announcement that Corey Taylor‘s second solo album CMF2 is coming out this September, we’re bound to hear more and more from one of metal’s more outspoken frontmen about a whole mess of topics.
While speaking on Loudwire Nights this past Tuesday, Taylor was asked about a whole mess of topics, but backing tracks eventually came up. And while Taylor said he’s not condemning anyone for using a backing track, he made it very clear that he won’t be using them at all.
“I want to set the record straight. Something I’ve been saying onstage at the solo shows is I’ve been trying to make a point about real live as opposed to tracks and computer live.
“Now, before I say anything, I want to say that I am not saying there is anything wrong with using computers or using tracks. To each his own, it’s fine. If that’s what you want to do, that’s fine. But for me, my proudest moment is that we get up onstage and we do it as a band. If you hear wrong notes, that is live. If you hear wrong chords, that is live. If you hear me mess the words up, that is live. That makes the experience completely individual to the person at the show.”
The use of backing tracks at various rock and metal shows has kicked up a bit of controversy among fans. Whether it’s Falling In Reverse canceling shows because their laptops were missing or Mötley Crüe’s alleged use of backing tracks being directly referenced in a lawsuit with their ex-guitarist Mick Mars, it’s almost like using the technology is a cardinal sin in certain circles.
Taylor further elaborated on his stance regarding backing tracks, stating that while he could absolutely use them to make his show “sound 100-percent amazing,” he would rather show people that it’s possible to make good music without it.
“I want to provide the alternative to these people who use a ton of tracks. And like I said, I’m not saying it’s wrong, but I don’t want people who are coming to a show to think that every show is like that. No matter how many times people who run tracks try to tell everybody that everybody runs tracks, not everybody runs tracks. I’m very proud of the fact that I don’t do that.”
If you want to hear his live, unfiltered performance in person, you can do that once he heads out on tour later this year. Check out the full list of dates below.
