Megadeth’s Next Album Will Be Their Last, Global Farewell Tour to Start Next Year

0

Well, what can I say? When I’m right, I’m right… In a blockbuster announcement made just moments ago, iconic thrash metal outfit Megadeth revealed that their next album — of which we know nothing about at this point — will be their last one ever. Not only that, but they’ll have one final global farewell tour that’s supposed to kick off sometime next year.

So that’s it. No more new Megadeth after that point. Don’t pass Go. Don’t collect $200. Game over, man.

Having been around since the inception of thrash metal in the early 80s, at first as a member of Panic, then as a member of Metallica, and ultimately as the jilted shredder that formed a rival band aimed at kneecapping his former bandmates, Dave Mustaine has seen it all. And while he never was able to truly slay the dragon that was Metallica’s financial success, accolades over the years, or in terms of awareness among the general public, metal fans know that at key points in their career, Mustaine’s Megadeth was faster, louder, and ruder than their counterparts.

Looking back on those 40+ years, Mustaine said he figured it was time to call it a career, stating that he’s had a hell of a run and he’s willing to go out on his own accord.

“There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them.

“We can’t wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. If there was ever a perfect time for us to put out a new album, it’s now. If there was ever a perfect time to tour the world, it’s now. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it’s our last studio album. We’ve made a lot of friends over the years and I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don’t be mad, don’t be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.

“We have done something together that’s truly wonderful and will probably never happen again. We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it’s played, and we changed the world. The bands I played in have influenced the world. I love you all for it. Thank you for everything.”

The end of Megadeth marks the second of the ‘Big Four’ to officially call it quits, with Slayer being the first to walk off into the sunset. And just like that band’s exit, Megadeth plans on having one final global farewell tour starting next year. Given how these “farewell tours” generally go, this may not be the true end of Megadeth, but as of right now, it will be the end of an era.

Think about it — Mustaine’s a 63-year-old grandfather. He’s made a lot of money, cemented his legacy as a major force in the thrash metal scene, and succeeded in creating a band that at times kicked the shit out of his old band Metallica in terms of sheer ferocity and speed.

No dates for that farewell tour have been announced just yet, but when they’re made available we’ll be sure to let you know about it.
