Slipknot’s Self-Titled Album Officially Hit Triple Platinum Over the Weekend

0

It feels like we’ve been talking about Slipknot‘s 1999 self-titled debut album for fucking ever lately, what with its 25th anniversary taking place last year, the celebratory tour that stretched out forever, and the recent release of its huge annivesary edition that came out this past Friday. But this latest bit of news is pretty damn impressive — after 26 years since its release, it’s finally hit triple platinum certification with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

For those not in the know, the RIAA bestows certain certifications on songs and albums based on sales data from retail and other markets. For example, Gold certifications come at 500,000 units, Platinum certs come at a million, and so on and so forth. So if Slipknot’s debut is now triple platinum, that means its sold three million copies since it was released in 1999.

Something to note is that it took a little over 20 years for the album to get that last million in sales, having reached double platinum in February 2005. The original album first went platinum in May 2000, having reached gold status just a couple months earlier in January 2000.
