Elder Drop Surprise EP ‘Liminality / Dream State Return’
What do you do when you’ve recorded two songs that span 18 minutes but you have no room for them in your latest album? If you’re proggressive psych out fit Elder, the answer is pretty simple — release a completely unexpected EP titled Liminality / Dream State Return and offer that to the teeming masses.
Released earlier today, Liminality / Dream State Return features a pair of new tracks, aptly named “Liminality” and “Dream State Return”. Though both tracks were originally composed as a single piece of music, the two tracks are availble today over at the band’s official Bandcamp. In addition to the digital versions, the band is also offering a 12″ vinyl pressing on translucent coke-bottle green vinyl.
As for the band’s thoughts on today’s release, they issued the following statement:
“In winter of 2024, Elder reconvened in Berlin after a year mostly spent on creative sabbatical. We’d been on tour for many months each year since the pandemic, and brains and bodies were in need of rest and reset,” wrote Elder of the process. “Before beginning to work on the next full-length in earnest, we decided it would be good to pick up a shelved project from years past as an excuse to get back in the saddle playing together.
“This work is mostly comprised of fragments written between the periods of Omens and Innate Passage, but which seemed to fit neither album. Meeting together in studio, we reworked the song and were surprised to see the session growing longer and longer as we jammed out into infinity. The result is a unique bit of Elder which has one foot in the past and one in the future.
“Liminality / Dream State Return explores the idea of the space in-between states of development; the lyrics were written mostly in a stream of consciousness while the song unfolded. For us, the project represents a picture of Elder in a transitory space.”
You can pick up this EP at the band’s Bandcamp or you can get the vinyl over here.
