Cage Fight Tackle Online Harassment of Women in New Single “PIG”
As a dude, I count my lucky stars every day that I don’t have to deal with the amount of bullshit that women do. Doesn’t matter if you’re conventionally beautiful or you’re just trying to go about your day, if you look like you have a vagina, there’s a good chance some creepy fuckface is going to harass you. And it’s even worse online thanks to the anonymity the internet provides.
Cage Fight, a female-fronted U.K. hardcore/thrash crossover band, had that sad fact of reality in mind when they wrote their latest single “PIG”. In it, vocalist Rachel Aspe calls out all the disgusting shit dudes think they can say to women online through unsolicited messages. The song draws on real-world experiences and the accompanying music video, which you can check out below, includes actual messages Aspe and other women have received online.
“‘PIG’ is the expression of my disgust of men sending unsolicited intimate pictures, messages, crossing boundaries and harassing women digitally. I’ve had hundreds over the years, and it’s crazy to think that everyday women regularly get these messages. I just wanted to scream my hatred to them, raise awareness of the issue and show solidarity to other women who experience this abuse.”
Translation, fellow dudes? Stop sending dick pics when they’re not wanted. No one wants to see that and it’s gross. Sadly, Amnesty International estimates that more than half of Gen Z women receive inappropriate emojis on their online posts, 44% receive unsolicited explicit images, and 40% are subjected to unwanted sexually explicit or suggestive comments. And that’s not even including bouts of body shaming, hate speech, and online stalking.
