The King of Death Metal, The Queen of Pop, and the Rare Cover That’s Making the Rounds Online

It’s been almost 24 years since the world lost death metal pioneer Chuck Schuldiner following his battle with brain cancer. Since then, death metal has become a powerhouse force in the metal world and pretty much every band out there can trace their lineage directly back to Schuldiner.

But what about the songs and he recorded that we never got to listen to? One such example of that cropped up over the weekend, where Schuldiner’s nephew Chris Steele posted an instrumental cover of Madonna’s 1998 track “Frozen” that he’d recorded sometime before his death.

Steele shared the recording via Instagram and posted the aforementioned cover, along with a little message about how he came across it.

“Found this today going through some things. Chuck recorded this in the early stages of his battle with cancer, I remember it well. Chuck sitting in his bedroom with his stealth and a drum machine. I’m not sure how many people outside of the faly and a few friends have heard this but it’s all yours. Chuck’s version of Madonna’s 1998 single ‘Frozen’.”

Though relatively simple in terms of production, it’s interesting to hear Schultiner’s sound on something like a Madonna track. Who knows, maybe this could have been a B-side for a Control Denied release that never came. Or maybe it was just a musician sitting down and having a little fun for themselves. Either way, it’s an interesting piece of death metal clap.
