For fuck’s sake, do we really have to justify Judas Priest’s inclusion on this list? They’re the very embodiment of capital M metal. Without Judas Priest the history of heavy metal would be drastically different, and you and I both know it, no justification needed.

But OK, fine. Let’s start with the ridiculously studly men in that there photo at the top of this post, who single-handedly defined metal fashion in the ’80s. Call it superficial, but outward aesthetic has always been an important element of heavy metal, and Judas Priest were the pioneers. For a bunch of average-looking blokes, they sure looked bad-ass.

I hear you, though: fashion is ultimately stupid, it all comes down to the music! Thankfully you could point to any number of iconic Judas Priest smashes that any grandpa, soccer mom or mallrat 12-year-old the world over would know, “Breaking the Law,” “Living After Midnight,” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’” among them. But a band is more than its hits, and Judas Priest have been cranking out quality albums for nearly 40 fucking years with [mostly] the same creative nucleus of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton and, until very recently, K.K. Downing. Even the Tim “Ripper” Owens era is not without its highlights. Alright, there may’ve been a few missteps along the way, but that’s bound to happen when you’ve released an astounding seventeen albums.

When it comes to what metal SOUNDS like, on a purely sonic level, no band wrote more of the book than Judas Priest, and that includes a fellow British band yet to appear on this list that often gets the credit. There’s Halford’s voice, which has directly influenced countless vocalists since and needs no further explanation. There’s Tipton and Downing’s style of neo-classical riffage and their love for the almighty guitarmony. None of that would’ve mattered if not for the unstoppable rhythm section of Ian Hill, the sole member who’s been in the band for their entire history, and drummers Dave Holland and Scott Travis.

Just how strong is the power of JP’s music? So strong that the revelation that frontman Rob Halford is gay, the single most taboo thing in metal, couldn’t even derail the legacy of this band; if anything, it only made that legacy stronger.
