Looking to pay homage to their heavy metal roots, this Danish death metal outfit created a slab of music full of speedy riffs and energy for days. This isn’t your typical death metal release though, as this has got more melody in it than bombast for the sake of spectacle. Try this out if traditional death metal is too much for you and you need to dip your toe in the water a little before you dive into the genre.

Bright As Blasphemy (Alchemy Recordings)
Alternative/nu-metal never died, it just kinda went to the underground for a bit. The duo known as Chevelle remains steadfast in that musical avenue, maintaining that downtuned rock guitar sound and angst that made them popular in the first place.

Spire Of Fear (Bleakhouse)
This industrial-hardcore outfit is back with some major “fuck you” vibes on this one. It’s intensely hardcore to the point that I can instantly visualize the pit in my mind — just a whirling gyre of bodies compelled to move by the industrial-sounding rhythms and riffs that fill the air. Listen if you want to bang your head as hard as you can.

Flowing from the mind of one Austin Lunn, we’ve got not one, but two Panopticon releases today with two very different sounds. Songs of Hiraeth is your typical atmospheric black metal you’d expect from Panopticon, while Laurentian Blue is a dark and melancholic folk album described as a companion to …And Again Into The Light that you should also expect from Panopticon. There are two wolves in this project and they’re both on full display with these albums.

If you’re looking for some industrial hardcore heaviness, you want the Street Sects release Dry Drunk. If you’re in for a more techno-pop synth kind of mood, then pick up Street Sex’s Full Color Eclipse. Or listen to both and see if you can find a common through line between the two releases.
